Fun Photo Challenge: 2026

Have fun with our monthly photo challenge. This is open to anyone interested in exploring their creative vision. Submissions are shown at a monthly Competition meeting and appear on our Facebook page. Above, by Roy O’Rear.

View submission guidelines and due dates below. Remember to be careful when out and about, in traffic and in Texas weather.

Challenge Topics

Jan. 24: Red. Create an image where red is the dominant and intentional element, driving the composition and emotional impact of the photograph. Red may appear in any subject or style, but it should clearly command attention and contribute meaningfully to the story.

Feb. 14Texas & Pacific (T&P) Station. Photograph the historic T&P Railway Station, 1600 Throckmorton Street/221 W. Lancaster.

March 14: Shadows and Silhouettes. A creative challenge focusing on dramatic use of shadows, silhouettes, or high-contrast lighting, shootable anywhere.

April 11: Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Highlight the beauty of our 109-acre Botanic Garden: flowers in bloom, the Japanese Garden, koi ponds, seasonal colors.

May 16: Motion. Experiment with capturing movement (e.g., blur, freeze action, long exposures.) This is a technical challenge doable in any location.

June 13Avenue of Light (Lancaster Avenue.) Be inspired by a striking series of stainless-steel sculptures along historic Lancaster Avenue, each about 36 foot tall with dramatic shapes that change with lighting, especially at sunrise or dusk.

July 11: Reflections. Explore mirrors, water, glass, or metaphorical reflections. Be creative,  location flexible.

Aug. 15Sundance Square. Capture the vibrant energy of downtown Fort Worth: street scenes, architecture, neon lights, events, or nightlife in this 35-block entertainment district.

Sept. 12: Framed Within. Create an image where your subject is framed by elements within the scene, such as doorways, windows, shadows, branches, hands or architecture. The frame should be intentional and guide the viewer’s eye to the main subject.

Oct. 10West 7th Street Bridge. Create an image with the bridge as the primary subject, highlighting its structure, lines, or relationship to the surrounding city. Creative perspectives, lighting and interpretation are encouraged to showcase the bridge in a unique and compelling way.

Nov. 14Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos.) Honor this vibrant tradition: altars (ofrendas), sugar skulls, marigolds, face painting, parades or cultural celebrations. Find  inspiration from local events or create your own anywhere. Dates and locations TBD.

Guidelines

The Photo Challenge will be separate from monthly member competition and will not have scores or awards; it’s for fun, sharing ideas and learning how other members view the same subjects. Here’s how it works:

  • Each month has an assigned subject.
  • Photos must be taken after Dec. 4, 2025.
  • Members may enter up to three images each month.
  • The images will be shown following the competition images and posted as a group on Facebook as an album and perhaps on our website.
  • The images will not be judged or assigned a score.
  • The images will be displayed in no order and the photographer’s name will be announced. Questions and positive comments are welcome as the image is shown. We want to enjoy the range of creativity of our members.

Submission of Images

  • Email them to submit.photochal@gmail.com on or before the due date with a subject line of “FWCC Photo Challenge Submission.”
  • Re-size your images to 1920 pixels wide and 1280 pixels high.
  • Rename your images using your first and last name with a space in between; put  number 2 after your name if entering a second image, and number 3 if submitting a third image
  • No need to remove metadata.
