Holly D. Gray

Holly D. Gray will introduce solargraphy, a long exposure photography technique that captures the sun’s path over days, weeks, or even years in a single image. Unlike traditional photography, solargraphy doesn’t use batteries, lenses or digital sensors. It relies on a simple homemade pinhole camera and a sheet of light-sensitive paper left in place to record the sun’s movement within the landscape.

Soloargraphy is a low-cost, beginner-friendly technique that requires no darkroom or expensive camera equipment. For Holly, the appeal lies in surrendering control to nature and time, collaborating with the elements in a process that is unpredictable and is meaningful precisely because of that uncertainty.

Each passing sun leaves a light streak burned into the photographic paper negative, recording time, space, and atmosphere in a single frame, and offering a rare chance to slow down and meditate on what usually goes unseen.

Holly will walk through how to build a basic pinhole camera, where and how to place it, and what to expect when the image is finally developed.

Holly was selected as an Amon Carter Community Artist for 2026. She has been a recurring visiting artist at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and a member of the Fort Worth Art Collective. In 2021, she founded Made of Gray, LLC, providing web design and photography services for creatives and small businesses.

She received her MFA from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2019, and has been an adjunct photography professor across North Texas, most recently at Texas Christian University.
